Collecting RPMs by Short Sets
One way of collecting upper denomination RPMs is to put together short sets. A short set of regular coins usually consists of 10-20 coins from the latter years of a series’ production. For example a short set of Mercury dimes begins with 1940 and goes through 1945, for a total of 18 coins. If you eliminate the Philadelphia pieces you are left with 12 mintmarked coins. Try assembling a set of RPMs for each of these 12 dates and mints. It can be quite a challenge as well as a lot of fun. My favorite short set is the Jefferson nickel wartime series. Even with Philadelphia using the gigantic P mintmark there are only 11 pieces in this set. Many spectacular RPMs exist and if you really want a challenge try putting together a set with full steps.
