Class III: Design Hub Doubling
Design Hub Doubling
This coin exhibits hub doubling that occurred as a result of a hub with a slightly different design being used for the subsequent hubbing. Because of the similarity in the design, the doubling is usually sporadic and localized. However, designs can have enough differences that the doubling is widespread, as in the case of some overdates. As you can imagine, this is one of the rarest and most desired classes of doubled dies. This class of doubled dies can only occur when two or more design varieties are in production at the same time. In order to prove a given doubled die is the result of design hub doubling, we need to provide examples of the two design varieties in normal production. The use of more than one design at the same time was not an uncommon occurrence at the Mint. The more we study our coinage, the more designs we are discovering. As these designs are documented the likelihood of proving a doubled die is the result of class III, design hub doubling, is greatly increased. One of the nicest examples is the 1960-D small over large date Lincoln cent. The doubling on the mintmark is due to repunching and not from the doubled die.
